From Earth to Eternity: A Literary Bridge Through His Pen

Dr. Bhawani Shankar Nial:

A Poet from Kalahandi Making Waves on the Global Literary Stage

Literature has undergone a profound transformation in recent decades, with new voices emerging that resonate with contemporary realities. One such remarkable voice is that of Dr. Bhawani Shankar Nial, whose poetry has captured the essence of the modern era. His verses are not just reflections of the present but a dynamic force in themselves—fluid, expressive, and deeply evocative. His poetry embodies a blend of global consciousness, human sensitivity, artistic beauty, and emotional warmth, making his works accessible yet profoundly impactful.

Dr. Nial’s poetic style is marked by simplicity and depth. His words carry an unpretentious clarity, devoid of literary arrogance, yet rich in wisdom and insight. Through his poetry, he highlights the ever-intensifying conflict between humans and nature, urging society to rethink its reckless approach toward the environment. He presents a compelling vision of how unchecked human actions against nature can become a harbinger of destruction. Unlike poets who romanticize death, he dares to confront it, questioning its essence while simultaneously embracing its inevitability with artistic brilliance.

At its core, his poetry is an ode to humanity’s fundamental values. Having personally endured the losses brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, his pain and resilience find expression in his poetry collection Lockdown, which has gained international acclaim. His poems, now translated into multiple languages, have placed Odia and Indian literature firmly on the global literary map.

Dr. Nial’s literary presence continues to expand internationally. His Lockdown poetry collection has recently been translated into Italian, German, French, and Portuguese by renowned international poets. The English version was translated by poet Bankim Mund and published by Yukiyoto Publishing, Canada. The book has been edited and reviewed by acclaimed poet and editor Maria del Castillo, further cementing its global recognition.

During the COVID-19 crisis, Lockdown captivated the literary world, offering a profound meditation on mortality, survival, and artistic consciousness. His poetry has now been translated into more than 24 languages worldwide. A distinguished figure in both Odia and Hindi literature, Dr. Nial has previously published three Odia poetry collections and one Hindi anthology.

Currently, he serves as the chief editor of the prestigious literary magazine Mahuri and has received numerous international literary awards. Additionally, he holds leadership positions in various literary organizations and has contributed to multiple newspapers and magazines. His editorial ventures include Surjya (1995), Kalahandi Express (2009), Abhyuthanam (2011), Bande Kalahandi (2014), and Mahuri (2008).
