NPP Rises From Division: “The Party You Once Knew Is No Longer The Party We Have Today”

By Johnson Watson

Monrovia – This weekend, the grounds hummed with a different energy. Scores of stakeholders of the National Patriotic Party of Liberia gathered not in factions, but in one accord.

It was more than a meeting. It was a reckoning, a reconnection, and for many, a homecoming.

Twelve years of division, fueled largely by personal interests after the 2023 presidential and general elections, have weighed heavily on the “indomitable” NPP. Today, that weight was set down.

The National Executive Committee meeting brought together the Party’s national leadership, county structures, women’s and youth wings, elders, and partisans from across the country. The agenda was heavy: reconciliation, survivability, and the future direction of the NPP. But the spirit in the room was heavier still — with unity, mutual respect, discipline, and a determination to put Liberia first.

“This was not just an ordinary gathering or a reconnecting symposium,” one senior member noted. “This was the perfect platform to deliberate on issues affecting the very survivability of the NPP.”

And deliberate they did.

Through hours of objective and thoughtful assessment, contentious issues that had lingered for years were placed on the table and examined without fear or favor. Recommendations came in from every wing of the Party — fascinating, patriotically balanced, and constructive. The focus was not on who was right, but on what would work for the institution and for the Liberian people it seeks to serve.

At the center of it all was former Vice President Cllr. Dr. Jewel Howard-Taylor, whose tolerance and leadership set the tone. She did not come merely to “mend fences.” Reconciliation, she showed, follows naturally when people agree in principle that division has no reward.

“We put aside all our flimsy and inconsequential disagreements,” a NEC member said. “We embraced the process of reuniting our beloved party with the firm determination to abandon the penurious and unsustainable practices through which some members had greedily sown seeds of discord.”

It was a moment of humility and honesty. Members spoke with humor and sincerity about the mistakes of the past and the work ahead. Petty issues were laid to rest without reservation. Egos were set aside for patriotism.

The message was clear: the NPP demonstrated resilience today.

“Had we failed to achieve this resounding milestone, it would have dealt a significant blow to our collective aspirations,” one partisan said. “Instead, we accomplished a remarkable level of reconciliation before our detractors, despite their flawed assumption that we could not reconcile our differences anytime soon.”

That reconciliation was sealed with a renewed sense of purpose. Leaders and members left with what they described as “renewed hope, renewed energy, and renewed purpose.” The commitment now is to replace division with unity, discouragement with optimism, and uncertainty with determination.

In a message to the Party following the meeting, Dr. Howard-Taylor expressed gratitude to every member who contributed to the success of the NEC gathering.

“The spirit of unity, mutual respect, discipline, and constructive engagement that characterized our deliberations demonstrated that our Party remains strong, resilient, and committed to its founding ideals,” she said. “When leaders and members come together with a shared purpose, we strengthen not only our institution but also our ability to serve the Liberian people.”

She thanked the NEC, county leadership, the women’s and youth wings, elders, and all partisans “who worked tirelessly to ensure the success of this important gathering.”

“As we move forward, let us remember that our greatest strength lies not in our individual ambitions but in our collective vision,” she continued. “Every conversation we have, every community we visit, and every hand we extend in friendship should reflect our determination to build a stronger, more united National Patriotic Party.”

Dr. Howard-Taylor also invoked faith and history as guideposts: “I thank Almighty God for guiding our deliberations and for granting us wisdom. History reminds us that great victories are achieved when committed people work together toward a common goal.”

She closed with words that drew applause across the hall:
“Strong parties are built through unity, strengthened by service, and remembered by the hope they give to the people. When we stand together with integrity and purpose, no challenge is greater than our determination.”

For many in attendance, the meeting marked a turning point.

“Today has been etched into the annals of our history,” one long-time partisan said. “The NPP you once knew is no longer the NPP we have today. We are more forceful, more united, and more formidable than ever before.”

That, leaders say, is the standard now. Loyalty, commitment, support, and discipline — not transient personal gain. Service to Party and service to nation.

As the NEC meeting adjourned, the charge was simple and direct: go back to the counties, go back to the communities, and build.

“Together, united in purpose and inspired by hope, we will continue to build a stronger National Patriotic Party and contribute to a brighter future for our nation,” Dr. Howard-Taylor said
