Poetry as a Bridge of Compassion at the Medellín International Poetry Festival

Medellín, Colombia — Poetry once again affirmed its enduring role as a language of humanity during the Medellín International Poetry Festival, where writers, translators, and cultural ambassadors from five continents gathered to celebrate literature as a force for dialogue, empathy, and peace.

Australian – Vietnamese poet Vo Thi Nhu Mai reflected on the spirit of the festival through a series of observations that captured the essence of Medellín as more than a literary event—it is a meeting place where poetry restores the human connections often fractured by conflict, distance, and uncertainty.

In Medellín, poets reflect on literature and its ability to heal the bonds between people in a world marked by divisions,” she wrote, emphasizing the festival’s commitment to fostering understanding across cultures.

One of the most moving moments shared during the gathering came through the story of a speaker who described pausing to greet a homeless man with a simple “hello.” That brief encounter became a powerful reminder that every human being deserves recognition and dignity. The story resonated deeply with participants, expanding into a wider conversation about poetry as an act of compassion and acknowledgment.

Many poets spoke openly about how poetry had sustained them through personal hardships, offering strength and hope during difficult moments. Their testimonies reinforced the belief that literature is not merely an artistic expression but also a source of resilience and healing.

The festival also paid tribute to the often-unseen work of literary translators. Several translators described the months of dedicated effort required to faithfully carry each poet’s unique voice into Spanish, ensuring that emotions, rhythms, and cultural nuances could reach new audiences while preserving the integrity of the original works.

Delegates representing countries across five continents expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to gather in Medellín, describing the festival as a living space for intercultural dialogue, solidarity, and shared artistic expression. Despite the many challenges confronting today’s world, participants agreed that poetry continues to create spaces where hope, friendship, and mutual understanding can flourish.

Through its vibrant program of readings, discussions, and cultural exchange, the Medellín International Poetry Festival once again demonstrated why it remains one of the world’s most respected literary gatherings—affirming that poetry is not only an art form but also a bridge between peoples, cultures, and hearts.
