Suva, Fiji – June 19, 2025
In a powerful demonstration of solidarity and the unifying force of poetry, the University of the South Pacific in Suva, the capital of Fiji, hosted an extraordinary evening titled “Poetry Night for Peace – In Support of Palestine” on the night of June 19th. The event, held under starlit Pacific skies, brought together nearly one hundred poets from across Oceania and beyond, creating a chorus of hope, resistance, and compassion.
Organized by the Fiji Poetry Shop, this deeply moving recital featured poets representing a diverse array of nations: Solomon Islands, Niue, Cook Islands, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Western Samoa, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Australia, and the host nation Fiji, alongside voices from India, Italy, and Lebanon, reflecting the global concern and artistic commitment to peace and justice.

A highlight of the evening was the powerful speech delivered by Christine Chen, Oceania Regional Coordinator of the World Poetry Movement (WPM), who spoke of poetry as a bridge across cultures and as a tool for healing and resistance. Chen’s words resonated with the audience, underlining the urgency of standing with the people of Palestine and using creative expression as a means to awaken conscience and inspire change.
The event not only affirmed the poetic spirit of the Pacific but also emphasized the region’s role in global conversations on peace and human rights. Through words, song, and shared presence, the participants reaffirmed their commitment to a more just and compassionate world.
The University of the South Pacific was a generous and gracious host, offering its space and support to this landmark event. Their hospitality and commitment to cultural dialogue were deeply appreciated by all participants and attendees.
As the evening concluded, the echoes of the poets’ verses lingered in the tropical air—a poignant reminder that while borders may divide, poetry unites. The Poetry Night for Peace marked not only a tribute to Palestine but also a testament to the enduring power of words in the pursuit of dignity and peace for all.
