Dragica Ohashi: A Single Mother in Gaza (Poem)

Illustration: Omar Bdoor

It’s World Breastfeeding Week

A single mother in Gaza

There is no milk because she is malnourished

Upper arm circumference

It is a more important topic in the shopping center

From the circumference of my breasts

Woman mother

Just like every being on the planet

She has a mission to raise a child

It’s her first mission

To nurse him

To bandage him

But as a refugee in Gaza

To cross 20 km to the corridor

Where humanitarian aid arrives

Love dies in the element of war

It remains a struggle for survival

The young mother watches helplessly

Big eyes hide tears

Her dear husband was killed

Sometimes he would bring her help

Today there is no one

To give her a hand of hope…

Heat and flies

There are no vitamins in a cup of soup

Tears and sweat in the veil

The war stole the peace

Instead of music, the sound of gunfire

While the child is sleeping!
