Miki Matheson: Japan’s Paralympic Gold Medallist and Global Advocate for Inclusive Sport

A distinguished Paralympian, International Paralympic Committee Governing Board member, and champion of accessibility, education, and social inclusion

TOKYO, JAPAN — Miki Matheson stands among Japan’s prominent figures in the Paralympic Movement, combining an outstanding sporting legacy with a sustained commitment to building a more inclusive society through para sport, education, and accessibility.

A three-time Paralympic gold medallist, Matheson represented Japan in ice sledge speed racing at the 1998 Nagano Winter Paralympic Games, where she won three gold medals and one silver medal. Her achievements established her as an exceptional athlete and helped demonstrate the power of para sport to challenge perceptions, inspire communities, and expand opportunities for persons with disabilities.

Leadership on the International Paralympic Stage

Matheson serves as a member-at-large of the Governing Board of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), the international governing body of the Paralympic Movement. Re-elected in 2025, she contributes to international leadership and discussions concerning the future of Paralympic sport, accessibility, diversity, equity, and inclusion. She also serves on the steering committee of the Japanese Paralympic Committee and works as a DEI consultant.

Her professional journey reflects a commitment to ensuring that the Paralympic Movement extends beyond elite competition. For Matheson, sport represents an important means of promoting dignity, independence, equal participation, and social transformation.

Education as a Pathway to Inclusion

One of Matheson’s significant contributions has been her involvement in the Japanese implementation of I’mPOSSIBLE, the International Paralympic Committee’s educational programme designed to introduce Paralympic values and encourage inclusive attitudes among young people.

Through this initiative, she has helped advance the idea that education can challenge stereotypes, improve understanding of disability, and encourage children to recognise the abilities and potential of others. The programme uses the Paralympic experience to demonstrate how changes in perspective and practical approaches can help overcome barriers that may initially appear insurmountable.

Matheson has also contributed to international discussions on disability inclusion, including the International Disability Inclusion Conference held at UNESCO headquarters in Paris in August 2024, where she presented Japan’s experience in promoting inclusive education through Paralympic learning resources.

From Personal Experience to Global Advocacy

Following a spinal cord injury at the age of 20, Matheson experienced firsthand the challenges faced by persons with disabilities. Her subsequent sporting career and international experiences helped shape her commitment to accessibility, inclusive education, and equal opportunities.

Her work reflects a broader vision of a society in which disability does not determine a person’s access to education, sport, employment, or public life. Through leadership, education, and advocacy, she continues to promote the values of participation, respect, and human potential.

Matheson’s journey illustrates how the Paralympic experience can become a platform for lasting social change. Her achievements as an athlete and her continuing contributions as an international sports leader demonstrate that the legacy of the Paralympic Games lies not only in medals and records, but also in the opportunities they create and the barriers they help remove.

A Continuing Commitment to the Paralympic Movement

As a Paralympic champion and international advocate, Miki Matheson represents the connection between sporting excellence and social responsibility. Her work in Japan and on the international stage highlights the importance of inclusive policies, accessible environments, and educational initiatives that enable everyone to participate fully in society.

Her story offers an enduring message: the true power of sport lies not only in what athletes achieve on the field of competition, but also in their capacity to change attitudes, inspire future generations, and help build a world in which everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
