أَبْوابٌ خَشَبِيَّةٌ — مِنْ خَشَبٍ عَتِيقٍ صُلْبٍ،
تَحْمِلُ عُرُوقُها رِيحَ الْمَوْسِمِ الْمُمْطِرِ، وَمِلْحَ الْبَحْرِ.

جُدْرَانٌ مِنْ طِينٍ مُحْرَقٍ،
وَكُرُومٌ عَتِيقَةٌ تَغْرِسُ الزَّمَنَ فِي الشُّقُوقِ.

جِذْعٌ مَقْطُوعٌ،
وَمَعَ ذٰلِكَ يُرْسِلُ بُرَاعِمَهُ مِنْ جَدِيدٍ.
زَقْزَقَةُ طَيْرٍ
تَسْتَرِيحُ عَلَى النُّدْبَةِ.

فِي قَلْبِ الْمَدِينَةِ،
يَخْتَلِطُ خَشَبُ الصَّنْدَلِ بِالْكُرِّي فِي الْهَوَاءِ.

جُمُوعٌ تَسِيرُ جَنْبًا إِلَى جَنْبٍ مَعَ الْبَقَرِ،
وَحَمَامٌ يَحُطُّ عَلَى فُتَاتِ النُّفَايَاتِ.

كَأَنَّهُ مَيْدَانٌ فِي أُورُوبَّا، فِي مَكَانٍ مَا.

أَسْلَاكٌ تَتَمَايَلُ،
وَتَحْتَهَا غُبَارٌ يَتَحَرَّكُ بِبُطْءٍ.

نَادِلٌ يَنْحَنِي،
وَكَأْسُ شَايِ الْمَسَالَا.

أَرْتَشِفُ.
يَصْعَدُ الْعِطْرُ،
وَتَسْتَقِرُّ الْمَرَارَةُ.

فِي الْقَاعِ صَفَاءٌ.

الْهَوَاءُ لَا نَقِيٌّ وَلَا مُلَوَّثٌ.
نُورٌ. غُبَارٌ.
يَبْقَيَانِ مُعَلَّقَيْنِ، مُتَبَاعِدَيْنِ.

Kolkata — A Sketch

Wooden doors — old hardwood.

Grain holding monsoon, salt.

Clay brick walls.

Vines press time into cracks.

A cut trunk

still sending out shoots.

Birdsong resting on the scar.

In the city’s core,

sandalwood and curry in the air.

Crowds moving with cattle.

Pigeons on refuse.

Like a square somewhere in Europe.

Wires swaying.

Below, dust shifting.

A waiter bends.

Masala tea.

I taste.

Aroma rising.

Bitterness settling.

Clear at the bottom.

The air neither clean nor unclean.

Light. Dust.

Held apart.

Layers.
