Cao Shui (simplified Chinese: 曹谁), also known as Shawn Cao (born June 5, 1982), is a Chinese poet, novelist, screenwriter and translator. He is a representative figure of contemporary Chinese literature. He leads the movement of “the Great Poetics”. In his “Manifesto of the Great-poem”, he seeks to integrate sacred and secular, eastern and western, ancient and Moderna cultures into Chinese literature. In 2008, he quit a newspaper and traveled around Tibet and Xinjiang, which are the center of Eurasia or the world from his perspective. His trilogy of novels Secret of Heaven tells the whole historical development of human civilization. His most outstanding works include Eurasian Epic, the aforementioned trilogy and The Peacock King (TV series). In his works he extracts elements from various ancient human civilizations, from Babylon to the West to Judea, Egypt, Greece, and to the East to Persia, India, China, and uses these elements to reconstruct a new utopian human homeland, which he always describes as Eurasia, the Top of the Tower of Babel or the Kunlun Mountains (Mountains of Heaven).
So far twenty books by Cao Shui have been published, including five collections of poems, three collections of essays, ten novels and one hundred episodes of TV series and films. He is a member of the Chinese Writers Association, the Chinese Film Association and the Chinese Poetry Society. He currently lives in Beijing and works as a professional writer and screenwriter.
