Egyptian artisan Faraj Mohamed Sayed El Deeb: A Prominent Innovator

Egyptian artisan Faraj Mohamed Sayed El Deeb is recognized as one of the most prominent innovators in the art of mother-of-pearl wood inlay in Egypt. Through decades of dedication to traditional craftsmanship, he contributed significantly to preserving and revitalizing this refined decorative art, which combines intricate woodworking with delicate inlaid shells. His exceptional mastery earned him international recognition, most notably when he won first prize in the field of mother-of-pearl wood inlay at the Muscat International Festival for Creativity and Innovation in Arts and Crafts in 2012, receiving an award of $5,000.

El Deeb is an active member of the Asala Association of Traditional and Contemporary Crafts at the historic Wekalet El‑Ghouri, where he has maintained a permanent exhibition and handicraft workshop for many years. Through this platform he has trained visitors and younger artisans while presenting authentic Egyptian craft traditions to local and international audiences. His works were also displayed for six consecutive years at the exhibition grounds in Nasr City, further strengthening his presence in the national craft scene.

Throughout his career, El Deeb participated in numerous international festivals and exhibitions, earning distinguished awards and recognition. Among these were his participation in the Sharjah International Wood Sculpture Exhibition in February 2014, the Tabriz International Festival for Arts, Crafts and Creativity in May 2017—where he received the Award of Excellence in woodwork worth $750—and the Pendik International Festival for Artisans in 2014. His works have also been showcased at the Zamalek Art Gallery in June 2015 and the Cairo Opera House in August 2014, as well as in workshops and exhibitions including the Marine Oasis workshop in 2015 and a series of cultural events at the Giza Culture Palace. Through these participations, Faraj El Deeb has established himself as an important ambassador of Egyptian traditional craftsmanship on the international stage.
