KEN SARO-WIWA INTERNATIONAL WRITERS’ RESIDENCY OPENS CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

 Maiden Edition to Hold at Mamman Vatsa Writers’ Village, Abuja – August to October 2025

Abuja, Nigeria — The Ken Saro-Wiwa International Writers’ Residency is officially accepting applications for its inaugural edition, scheduled to take place from August 30 to October 11, 2025, at the scenic Mamman Vatsa Writers’ Village, nestled in the Mpape Hills of Abuja, Nigeria.

Founded in 2024 by the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), the Residency honours the memory of ANA’s former President and renowned environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, who was executed along with eight others during Nigeria’s darkest military era.

This groundbreaking residency provides a dedicated, state-of-the-art space for African writers to focus on their craft, connect with fellow creatives, and contribute to the continent’s evolving literary landscape. The program promotes creative excellence, cultural exchange, and mentorship, fostering collaboration between emerging and established writers across Africa.

WHO CAN APPLY:

The Residency is open to practising creative writers living in Africa who work in fiction, non-fiction, poetry, or literary criticism. Applicants must have at least one published work in print or digital formats and be currently engaged in a literary manuscript.

WHAT TO SUBMIT:

Applicants must submit:

  • A comprehensive 2-page résumé, including publication history

  • A 500–750-word sample of the proposed manuscript (or 5 poems for poets)

  • A 500-word statement of purpose

  • A one-page profile or portfolio

  • Two referral letters:

    • One from the Chairman of their ANA State Chapter (or PAWA Secretary-General for international applicants)

    • One from a respected Nigerian literary figure

  • Proof of African nationality and residence

All application materials must be compiled into a single PDF titled with the surname, first name, and genre, and submitted to:

BENEFITS:

  • ₦15,000 weekly stipend per resident for the 4-week program

  • ₦100,000 transport grant for local residents and ₦200,000 for international residents

  • An optional 2-week extension at personal expense

KEY DATES:

  • Application Deadline: 12th July 2025

  • Residency Dates: 30th August – 11th October 2025

Participants will be expected to engage with local students and partake in cultural activities during the residency.
