Urgent Humanitarian Appeal – Escalating Crisis in As-Suwayda Governorate, Southern Syria

The Silk Road Today Media Center has received an urgent humanitarian appeal regarding the escalating crisis in As-Suwayda Governorate, southern Syria. The full text is as follows. The platform calls on national and international human rights organizations to intervene and put an end to the violations against the people of As-Suwayda.

Dear all,

We are writing to urgently raise the alarm regarding the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation in As-Suwayda Governorate, southern Syria.

Background:

Sweida and its majority Druze community are currently under severe attacks by various militias arriving from multiple regions across Syria. Reports indicate a high intensity of violence, including:

  • Drone strikes
  • Heavy shelling
  • Field executions

These attacks have resulted in a rising number of civilian casualties, including children.

There is growing evidence of grave human rights violations and breaches of international humanitarian law, including:

  • Indiscriminate shelling of civilian neighborhoods by forces affiliated with the Syrian Transitional Government, leading to mass casualties among unarmed civilians.
  • Field executions and arbitrary detentions of civilians.
  • A complete blockade imposed on the governorate, restricting the entry of food, medicine, and other essential supplies. Children are especially affected and urgently need nutrition and medical care.
  • Electricity and communication networks have been cut off, worsening an already dire humanitarian situation.
  • Targeted attacks on medical personnel and facilities, including the killing of Talaat Amer at the National Hospital, and ongoing obstruction preventing the wounded from receiving care.
  • Dehumanising treatment of detainees, including being forced to mimic animal sounds.
  • Widespread arson and looting, with dozens of homes and commercial shops burned following field executions carried out inside residences.

Our Urgent Appeal:

In light of these grave violations and the escalating humanitarian crisis, we urgently call upon all concerned parties to:

  1. Engage immediately with international political actors and United Nations bodies to halt the violence and protect civilians.
  2. Ensure the safe entry of medical relief teams and personnel to deliver urgent assistance to the wounded and those in critical need.
  3. Facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid, including essential medical supplies and food—especially to vulnerable groups such as children.

This is a matter of utmost urgency.
We urge all responsible bodies and international humanitarian actors to act immediately to prevent further loss of life and to uphold the fundamental rights and dignity of the civilian population in As-Suwayda.
