Medellín, Where the Poem Is Reborn

Medellín!
O city that writes us as we write you,
Capital that grows poems from stone,
And pours ink upon the sun’s columns—ink that never dries.

For thirty-five years,
Poets have come to you from the four corners of the earth,
Not as bearers of passports,
But as ambassadors of letters.
They sit upon your thresholds
And read once more the anthem of life.

From the Far East, one comes—
A monk emerging from silence,
Distilling wisdom from a cloud of words,
Splitting rocks open,
Planting meaning in the thirsty soil.

The African comes,
Baptized in the Nile and the Congo,
Shaking off the dust of the colonizer,
Writing in his first tongue the hymn of liberation.

The Arab comes,
Not to recite another Thousand and One Nights as the stranger did,
But to create his own—
Perfumed with the Tigris and Euphrates,
Graced with the grandeur of pyramids,
And echoing the gallop of conquerors
Who passed through the poem as if upon a silk road.

The European comes,
Dreaming of a hidden paradise,
Carrying his soul in a suitcase of memory’s leather,
Gazing into the collective mirror
To glimpse what remains of the human.

The American comes,
Bearing the flags of democracy,
Singing the songs of liberty,
With the bitterness of contradiction,
Seeking a truth deeper than the headlines.

The Latin American comes,
As if returning home,
Knowing your alleys and borrowed names,
Dancing with you to the rhythm of struggle,
Writing for you what has yet to be written.

The Palestinian comes,
Yes,
He comes carrying his own coffin,
Not filled with death,
But with words that rise from beneath his keffiyeh,
Carrying the memory of the land,
Telling the world
That love can be resistance,
And a poem, a homeland set free.

All come,
And Medellín,
Year after year,
Opens her arms like a mother of poems.
She embroiders her banner with the letters of those who arrive,
Weaves it with threads of love,
Records it in sound,
And releases it into the air—
Printed poems,
Wings that cross the ether.

O Medellín,
O icon of poetry in this turbulent age,
Be for us a poem that never ends.

¡Medellín!
Ciudad que nos escribe mientras la escribimos,
Capital que hace brotar poemas de la piedra,
Y vierte tinta sobre las columnas del sol—tinta que no se seca jamás.

Treinta y cinco años,
y los poetas peregrinan a ti desde los cuatro puntos del mundo,
no como portadores de pasaportes,
sino como embajadores de la palabra.
Se sientan en tus umbrales
y leen de nuevo el himno de la vida.

Desde el Lejano Oriente llega uno,
como un monje que sale de su silencio
a destilar la sabiduría de una nube de palabras,
abriendo la roca,
haciendo brotar el sentido en la tierra sedienta.

Llega el africano,
lavado por las aguas del Nilo y del Congo,
sacudiéndose el polvo del colonizador,
y escribe en su lengua primera el canto de la libertad.

Llega el árabe,
no para contar mil y una noches ajenas,
sino para crear las suyas,
con perfume de los ríos gemelos,
con la grandeza de las pirámides,
y el galope de conquistadores
que cruzaron el poema como si fuera una ruta de seda.

Llega el europeo,
soñador de un paraíso interior,
con el alma guardada en una maleta de cuero de memoria,
mirando en el espejo colectivo
lo que queda del ser humano.

Llega el americano,
con banderas de democracia,
con cantos de libertad,
con la amargura de las contradicciones,
buscando un sentido más profundo que un titular.

Llega el latinoamericano,
como quien vuelve a casa,
conociendo tus callejones y tus nombres prestados,
bailando contigo al ritmo de la lucha,
y escribiéndote lo que aún no se ha escrito.

Llega el palestino,
sí,
llega cargando su ataúd,
no lleno de muerte,
sino de palabras que salen de debajo de su kufiyya,
portando la memoria del país,
contando al mundo
cómo el amor puede ser resistencia,
y cómo el poema puede ser una patria liberada.

Todos llegan,
y Medellín,
cada año,
abre sus brazos como madre del poema.
Borda su bandera con letras de los que llegan,
la teje con hilos de amor,
la graba en el sonido,
y la lanza al aire—
poemas impresos,
alas que cruzan el éter.

Oh Medellín,
ícono de la poesía en este tiempo turbulento,
sé para nosotros un poema sin fin.

Medellín !
Ô ville qui nous écrit comme nous t’écrivons,
Capitale où les pierres fleurissent en poèmes,
Et où l’encre coule sur les colonnes du soleil — une encre qui ne sèche jamais.

Depuis trente-cinq ans,
les poètes viennent à toi des quatre coins du monde,
non pas porteurs de passeports,
mais ambassadeurs des lettres.
Ils s’assoient sur tes seuils
et relisent le chant de la vie, une fois encore.

De l’Extrême-Orient vient l’un,
moine sorti de son silence,
distillant la sagesse d’un nuage de mots,
fendant la roche,
faisant germer le sens dans une terre assoiffée.

L’Africain arrive,
baigné par les eaux du Nil et du Congo,
secouant la poussière du colon,
et dans sa langue première, il chante la liberté.

L’Arabe arrive,
non pour redire les Mille et Une Nuits de l’autre,
mais pour créer les siennes,
avec le parfum du Tigre et de l’Euphrate,
la majesté des pyramides,
et le galop des conquérants
qui traversaient le poème comme une route de soie.

L’Européen arrive,
rêveur d’un paradis intérieur,
portant son âme dans une valise en cuir de mémoire,
regardant dans le miroir collectif
ce qu’il reste de l’humain.

L’Américain arrive,
avec les drapeaux de la démocratie,
les hymnes de la liberté,
et l’amertume des contradictions,
cherchant un sens plus profond qu’un journal télévisé.

Le Latino arrive,
comme un fils rentrant chez lui,
connaissant tes ruelles et tes noms d’emprunt,
dansant avec toi sur le rythme de la lutte,
et t’écrivant ce qui reste encore à écrire.

Le Palestinien arrive,
oui,
il arrive portant son cercueil,
non pas rempli de mort,
mais de mots qui émergent de sous son keffieh,
portant la mémoire du pays,
racontant au monde
que l’amour peut être résistance,
et que le poème peut être une patrie libérée.

Tous viennent,
et Medellín,
chaque année,
ouvre ses bras comme une mère du poème.
Elle brode son étendard des lettres des arrivants,
le tisse avec des fils d’amour,
l’enregistre en sons,
et le libère dans l’air —
poèmes imprimés,
ailes traversant l’éther.

Ô Medellín,
icône de la poésie dans ce temps troublé,
sois pour nous un poème sans fin.

ميديين!
أيتها المدينة التي تكتبنا كما نكتبها،
أيتها العاصمة التي تُنبت من الحجارة قصائد،
وتسكب على أعمدة الشمس حبرًا لا يجف.

خمسة وثلاثون عامًا،
والشعراءُ يحجون إليكِ من جهاتِ الأرض الأربع،
ليسوا حملة جوازات،
بل سفراء حروف،
يجلسون على عتباتكِ
ويقرؤون نشيد الحياة من جديد.

يأتيك الساكن في أقصى الشرق،
كراهبٍ خرج من صمته
ليقطّر الحكمة من غيمة الكلمات،
تشقّ بها الصخر،
وتنبت المعنى في أرضٍ عطشى.

ويأتيك الإفريقي،
مغسولًا بماء النيل والكونغو،
ينفض عن كتفيه غبار المستعمِر،
ويكتب بلغته الأولى نشيد التحرر.

ويأتيك العربي،
لا ليُروِي ألفَ ليلةٍ كما رواها الغريب،
بل ليخلقها من ذاته،
وفيها عطرُ الرافدين،
وجلالُ الأهرامات،
وصهيلُ الفاتحين الذين مرّوا بالقصيدة كأنها طريق حرير.

ويأتيك الأوروبي،
حالمًا بفردوسٍ داخلي،
يحمل روحه في حقيبةٍ من جلد الذاكرة،
ويتأمل في المرآة الجماعية ما تبقّى من الإنسان.

ويأتيك الأمريكي،
بأعلام الديمقراطية،
وبأناشيد الحرية،
ومرارة التناقض،
يبحث عن معنى أعمق من نشرة أخبار.

ويأتيك اللاتيني،
كمن عاد إلى بيته،
يعرف أزقتكِ وأسماءكِ المستعارة،
يرقص معكِ على نغمة النضال،
ويكتب لكِ ما لم يُكتب بعد.

ويأتيك الفلسطيني،
نعم،
يأتيك حاملاً نعشه،
ليس فيه موت،
بل كلمات خرجت من تحت كوفيته
تحمل ذاكرة البلاد،
تقصّ على العالم
كيف يكون الحب مقاومة،
وكيف تكون القصيدة وطنًا يُحرر.

يأتي الجميع،
وميديين،
كل عام،
تفتح ذراعيها كأمٍ للقصيدة.
تطرّز رايتها بحروف القادمين،
تغزلها بخيطٍ من محبة،
توثقها بالصوت،
وتطلقها في الهواء،
قصائدَ مطبوعة،
وأجنحةً تعبر الأثير.

يا ميديين،
يا أيقونة الشعر في هذا الزمن المضطرب،
كوني لنا قصيدة لا تنتهي.
