Across the world, Russian Houses Commemorate the 140th anniversary of Nikolai Gumilyov

Across the world, Russian cultural centers and Russian Houses are commemorating the 140th anniversary of the birth of the great Russian poet Nikolai Gumilyov. From Rome to Brussels, from Addis Ababa to Kabul, literary evenings, exhibitions, poetry readings, and cultural gatherings are being organized to honor the enduring legacy of one of Russia’s most influential literary voices.

These celebrations reflect the global resonance of Gumilyov’s poetry, which continues to inspire readers through its philosophical depth, vivid imagery, and spirit of exploration. By marking this milestone anniversary, Russian Houses around the world reaffirm the importance of cultural dialogue and the timeless power of literature to unite people across borders and civilizations.

The Russian House in Rome marked the 140th anniversary of the renowned Russian poet Nikolai Gumilyov. To commemorate the occasion, a literary and musical salon was organized. In addition to readings of poems by the “knight of the Silver Age,” the audience was introduced to Gumilyov’s travels in Italy and the reflection of Italy in his poetry, according to the Telegram channel of the Russian House in Rome.

Works by the Russian poet were read by Italian actor and director Marco Bellocchi, and the program also included vocal and instrumental performances. The audience was immersed in the artistic world of one of the brightest literary movements of the Silver Age — Acmeism, to which Nikolai Gumilyov belonged.

A special part of the event was devoted to exploring the connection between the poet’s life, творчество and Italy. Guests learned about Gumilyov’s journey to the Apennines with his wife Anna Akhmatova, as well as the works he created after visiting Genoa, Pisa, Florence, and other Italian cities.

The poetry of Nikolai Gumilyov and Anna Akhmatova is becoming increasingly accessible and familiar to Italian readers. One of the salon’s guests, Leonid Fisenko, presented his Italian translations of works by the Russian classics of the Silver Age
