War and Love

This novel can no longer hold more characters,
for speaking of war and love
makes the pages overflow with victims:
the dead, blessed with silence,
and the living, who chatter all the time.
One takes a photograph with the sun,
another swallows a butterfly,
miserable children chase after their shadows,
and mature women
wait until the boys reach halfway.
But the wicked writer
hates happy endings.

La guerra y el amor

Esta novela ya no puede contener más personajes,
porque hablar de la guerra y el amor
hace que las páginas se llenen de víctimas:
los muertos, bendecidos por el silencio,
y los vivos, que parlotean sin cesar.
Uno se toma una foto con el sol,
otro se traga una mariposa,
niños miserables corren tras sus sombras,
y mujeres maduras
esperan a que los muchachos lleguen a mitad de camino.
Pero el escritor malvado
odia los finales felices.
