CAJ – Born in Africa. Citizen of the Universe

Mission Statement of the Congress of African Journalists (CAJ)

Preamble:

Born in Africa, speaking to the world. The Congress of African Journalists exists because truth has no passport, and injustice respects no border.

Our Mission:

The Congress of African Journalists (CAJ) serves as a communication bridge linking all continents of the world. We are convened to unite journalism, literature, and the arts into one global platform dedicated to the benefit of mankind.

1. Bridge the Continents:

CAJ is an African-led, world-embracing network. We connect newsrooms in Lagos with newsrooms in London, Nairobi with New York, Dakar with Delhi, Cairo with Caracas. Our duty is to ensure that Africa’s story is told from Africa and that the world’s story is heard in Africa without distortion, without delay, without gatekeepers who profit from distance.

2. Extend the Circle: Honorary Membership Beyond Africa:

Truth requires many tongues. CAJ therefore extends honorary membership to non-African journalists, writers, poets, filmmakers, photographers, and arts societies who share our commitment to human dignity, press freedom, and cultural integrity.

Honorary members do not replace African voices. They amplify them. They stand as witnesses that the storm hitting one continent is felt on all shores. Together we form a worldwide fellowship where a threat to one reporter is an alert to all.

3. Unite Journalism: Literature, and the Arts

Facts inform. Stories transform. Art transcends.

CAJ builds a worldwide platform where: Journalism exposes what is broken; Literature explains why it matters; Arts imagine what is possible. From investigative reports to poems, from documentaries to paintings, we deploy every medium that can carry truth and stir conscience. A folktale can dethrone a vulture. A photograph can bring Odysseus home. A poem can calm Poseidon’s sea.
